Strong Professional Instincts
Lisa makes an unforgettable first impression on the new director.
So we have a new director at work.
I knew this.
There were emails. There was a calendar thing. Someone definitely mentioned his name. I am an adult woman with a job and access to all of this information.
Anyway.
This morning I walked into the kitchen and there was a guy standing by the coffee machine looking slightly lost. Youngish. Nice shirt. No badge that I could see.
So naturally I said, “You must be the new intern.”
He looked at me for a second and said, “No, I’m Evan.”
And because apparently there was still time to make this worse, I smiled and said, “Oh! Sorry. What department are you interning with?”
He said, “I’m the new director.”
There are moments in life when your brain offers you several possible responses and somehow you select the only one that should have been removed during testing.
I said:
“Are you sure?”
He laughed.
Thank God.
I did not.
I went back to my desk and messaged Daniel to tell him I might need to find another job.
His response was:
“Did you ask him for ID?”
I hate that man.
Evan came by about twenty minutes later and told me not to worry because at least I hadn’t asked him to make coffee.
I had.
I just hadn’t gotten to that part yet.
So anyway, great first impression. Strong professional instincts. Really establishing myself as a serious person around here.
If anyone needs me, I’ll be under my desk until approximately Thursday.
